South Pointe Junior High School's beautiful campus was once the South Mountain Court Justice. The building has been dedicated to two honorable women: Judge Pamela Gutierrez and Leona Coats.
On October 25 2008, over 100 people came out for this joyous event. South Pointe Junior High's elegant dancers honored both women with a ribbon dance to "Wind Beneath My Wings". Judge Williams moved the crowd with her compassionate and encouraging speech and our own CEO Dr. William Coats brought tears to all with his reminiscent thoughts of his mother. This event was historic for South Pointe Junior High School. We aspire to make a powerful impact to the youth as these two women did. Judge Pamela Gutierrez Judge Gutierrez served as South Mountain justice of the peace for more than 13 years. Pamela Guitierrez was the first African American Judge to be elected in her position for the entire State of Arizona. She was elected to her first term as justice of the peace in 1994. She promoted academic excellence in all young people. Before succumbing to her battle with cancer she made the public aware of the disease by participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, speaking to the community about her own personal experiences. |
